Operations > Coke
Coke is a hard, dry carbon substance produced by heating coal to a very high temperature
in the absence of air. It is used in the manufacturing of iron, steel, and other
industrial products.
There are currently five remaining merchant foundry coke plants in the United States
producing foundry, industrial, and furnace coke. A merchant coke plant has by-product
coke-making operations which provide more than fifty percent of the coke produced
to operations, industries or processes other than iron-making blast furnaces associated
with steel production.
Coke operations use only metallurgical coal, which is suitable for carbonization
and has a lower volatility. Drummond’s coke operation, ABC Coke, is well known in
the foundry industry for the high quality of its product.
Metallurgical coal used by ABC Coke is shipped to our facility from both Alabama
and West Virginia coal mines. The coke is then sold to foundries supplying the automotive
and construction pipe industries in the US and Mexico.
